Overview
The XF605 Professional Camcorder is the next-generation XF-series camera providing excellent mobility, connectivity, and superb 4K UHD HDR image quality. Equipped with Canon’s renowned Dual Pixel CMOS AF, the XF605 achieves high-speed and high-accuracy focusing, and is the first XF-series model to include Eye Detection AF, as well as iTR AF X head detection algorithm that improves face and head detection for more accurate and stable tracking of subjects.
The XF605 features a 4K L-series 15x Optical Zoom lens with 3-ring manual control. XF605 can shoot 10-bit 4:2:2 4K UHD footage in XF-AVC (Intra-frame and Long GOP) and MP4 formats to dual SD cards for easy post-production and quick delivery. It features multiple recording modes including Frame, Interval, and Slow and Fast motion up to 120fps in FHD.
An ideal tool for news gathering, XF605 features the CTM (Content Transfer Mobile) iPhone application which allows for proxy footage, audio, and metadata to be exchanged with a newsroom server through the phone connection in the field and integrates into newsroom assignment planning software.
For remote control of key camera features, Canon’s XC Protocol, an IP-based protocol that remotely controls camera settings, is available in the XF605. XC Protocol enables remote control of the camera’s focus, auto focus, iris, shutter, ISO/gain, the recall of custom picture settings and other important camera settings. XC Protocol makes remote control possible through IP network-connected devices such as the Canon RC-IP100 controller or other IP-enabled 3rd-party camera controllers.
New with the December 2023 firmware update is support for the Canon Multi-Camera Control App. The App provides the ability to control multiple cameras from an iPhone via Wi-Fi.
The XF605 features a Multi-Function Shoe that is compatible with a new XLR microphone adapter (developed by TEAC Corporation) for increasing the total number of XLR inputs to 4, providing a flexible audio recording workflow.
The camera features built-in Wi-Fi/Ethernet for Browser Remote, Canon Multi-Camera Controll app, CTM (Content Transfer Mobile) app, IP streaming, and FTP transfer. The camera is also the first XF-series camera to feature USB Video Class allowing use as a webcam without the need for a 3rd Party HDMI to USB adapter.
1.0-inch 4K UHD CMOS Sensor
The XF605 Professional Camcorder features a Canon 1.0-inch 4K UHD CMOS image sensor capable of 4K UHD video capture at 60p and slow motion recording up to 120fps in Full HD, making the camcorder a strong contender for professional productions, ENG applications and more.
The XF605 camcorder’s 1.0-inch sensor allows for larger photosites compared to smaller-sized sensors, resulting in improved images with less noise in low-light situations. The larger sensor also exhibits a shallower depth of field at large apertures, providing greater depth of field control and creative options. The camcorder’s DIGIC DV 7 imaging engine further enhances the high sensitivity and low noise performance of the camcorder.
15x Optical 4K UHD L Zoom Lens with 5-Axis Optical Image Stabilization
The XF605 Professional Camcorder incorporates a Canon 4K video lens that leverages proprietary Canon optical technologies derived from years of experience in developing Cinema, Broadcast and EF-series lenses.
Inspired by the same high level of optical precision used in Canon broadcast and photographic lenses, the Canon XF605 camcorder incorporates a Genuine Canon 15x L-series optical zoom lens that maintains 4K UHD quality throughout the entire zoom range, and offers a focal length range of 25.5 to 382.5mm (35mm film equivalent). Users can get up to 30x Advanced Zoom when shooting in Full HD, which utilizes the XF605 camcorder’s full 4K UHD sensor to extend the zoom range while maintaining image quality.
5-Axis Optical Image Stabilization
The XF605 camcorder also incorporates a 5-axis Optical Image Stabilization (IS) system, featuring three modes of image stabilization: Standard, Dynamic and Powered. In Standard IS mode, the stabilizing angle is made constant, independent of the zoom magnification. Dynamic IS mode extends the stabilizing range at the wide end of the focal length, allowing for image stabilization when shooting while walking. Powered IS mode helps facilitate stabilization in the low frequency range at the tele end and should be used exclusively for fixed-point shooting which does not involve panning.
9-blade Iris
For enhanced versatility and durability, the lens features a 9-blade iris, producing artistic and beautiful out-of-focus areas or “bokeh.” The 9 blades allow for attractive circular blurring in out-of-focus regions, while the use of an odd number of blades helps reduce flaring of specular highlights.
Optical Wide and Tele Accessories
The optional Wide Attachment WA-U58 and the Tele Converter TL-U58 accessories expand the creative capabilities of the XF605 camcorder.
The Wide Attachment WA-U58 offers a 0.8x wider angle of view that enables users to capture more of a scene, especially when indoors or in tight spaces, to lend better perspective to your video narrative. The Tele Converter TL-U58 provides extended 1.5x longer telephoto range for the XF605 camcorder’s fixed lens, allowing distant subjects to be captured with brilliant clarity.
Independent 3-Density ND Filter
A compact and independent internal 3-density ND filter, using a turret (circular) mechanism, allows the user to select from three densities (ND 1/4, ND 1/16, and ND 1/64) or turn the feature off if needed. Density can be adjusted using the dedicated external buttons.
4K UHD 59.94P 4:2:2 10-bit Recording
The XF605 Professional Camcorder supports 4K UHD 59.94p 4:2:2 10-bit recording to support natural and realistic 4K video production. Users can choose between MXF-based XF-AVC Intra-frame and Long GOP and versatile MP4 formats.
The latest firmware (now available) adds two additional recording options: H.264 FHD 25Mbps and 16Mbps FHD MP4 proxy recording.
Also, chunk recording, continuous playback of multiple clips and an option to add the “_Proxy” suffix to proxy recordings are newly added to the XF605’s recording capabilities.
DIGIC DV 7 Image Processor
The XF605 features Canon’s DIG!C DV7 image processor that takes the extensive RAW information captured from the imaging sensor and processes it for output. DiG!C is also the engine behind features such as high frame rate recording, Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus, HDR (PQ/HLG) output, and proxy recording.
HDR Recording with HLG/PQ Shooting Asset
The XF605 Professional Camcorder supports HDR recording in Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) and Perceptual Quantization (PQ) formats. This helps ensure full color rendition and wide latitude with a much greater range from black to pure white – ideal for the delivery of live streams, broadcasts, and post-production projects. The XF605 also features a variety of assist functions to support auto/manual exposure control during HDR shooting, allowing users to record HDR video using their usual shooting methods.
Canon Log 3
Designed with creative post-processing in mind, Canon Log 3 is a gamma designed for simple grading at a deep level for toning up dark areas and adjusting color tone/gradation to make noise less noticeable. By shooting in Canon Log 3, users can manipulate the information that’s recorded, from dark areas to highlights. This makes the range for color grading wider and enables video to be produced with generous latitude that couldn’t be reproduced with video gammas. Simple previews can also be performed on-site with Look-Up Table (LUT) accuracy.
Canon Log 3 shooting can be especially effective for documentaries and other settings with drastic changes, along with outdoor and other locations where light conditions change frequently, or where monitoring setups may be insufficient.
Wide DR Gamma (800%) Support
The XF605 Professional Camcorder supports Wide DR Gamma. For natural and realistic-looking image capture that faithfully represents the scene at hand, Wide DR Gamma achieves a wide dynamic range of 800% to produce almost seamless tone gradations, resulting in smooth detail and virtually no blown-out highlights, all without requiring post-production.
Dual SD Card Slots
The XF605 has dual SD card slots for simultaneous recording in different formats, including 4K/HD and XF-AVC/MP4. Double Slot Recording and Relay Recording modes are also available.
Slow and Fast Motion Recording up to 120fps
The XF605 Professional Camcorder supports slow and fast motion recording, and can record in a different frame rate from playback for slow and fast motion effects. Slow motion recording of up to 120 fps (x0.2) in Full HD is supported, helping to create an emotionally moving and exciting style of video. Face detection AF and tracking are also available in slow and fast motion recording modes when framerates between 24p to 120p are selected.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF, Eye Detection AF, EOS iTR AF X, Dual Pixel Focus Guide
Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology uses every pixel on the imaging sensor to detect focus and to capture actual image information, offering users high precision focusing and exceptional image quality.
The XF605 is the first XF-series camera to feature Eye Detection AF which further increases the accuracy of focus on human subjects.
The XF605 is also the first XF-series camera to feature EOS iTR AF X, which includes a head detection algorithm developed with deep learning technology. In Face Detection mode, the AF works with this advanced algorithm to dramatically improve distance measuring and tracking reliability.
The XF605 also features Dual Pixel Focus Guide, which is an innovative UI that gives users both front- and back-focus information telling users if the focus position is in the back or the front, aiding in smooth pulls during manual focus.
Direct Touch Control
The XF605 is equipped with Direct Touch Control which allows easy access to commonly used menu settings on the fully-rotatable LCD screen. Users will be able to simply touch the screen to start/stop recording, access file format and resolution, set ISO/Gain, color temperature and iris, and display important settings. Shooting settings that were once in various places of the menu can now be accessed with one hand, allowing for on-the-spot changes while holding the camera.
UVC Support
XF605 is the first Professional Camcorder to support UVC (USB Video Class) which enables use as a webcam, allowing for simple connectivity and advanced shooting capabilities such as autofocus tracking and zoom for basic webcam applications.
Look File for Recording (User LUT)
Look File allows you to import ‘.Cube’ type 3D LUTs for use while recording. This function greatly improves the flexibility of XF605 in professional workflows.
High Sensitivity Mode
Allows for shooting in dark environments by boosting gain to 36 db.
3.5-inch Rotating Touch Panel LCD and .36-inch OLED Electronic Viewfinder
The monitor allows for on-camera monitoring of footage in real time and features a rotating design that brings flexibility and user preference to support 4K shooting, which demands strict focus accuracy.
The OLED viewfinder displays approx. 1.77 million dots, allowing shooters to see bright parts in the image and dark shadow detail. The EVF can then be used to adjust parameters and camcorder settings accordingly.
The latest firmware (now available) includes a default setting for focus peaking and zebra output. Display of focus peaking and zebras in default mode will be limited to the camera’s LCD screen and OLED viewfinder only and will not be output over SDI or HDMI.
12G-SDI, Genlock, Time Code, and Other Terminals
AThe XF605 Professional Camcorder features a 12G-SDI terminal with four times the transmission speed of 3G-SDI. The camcorder’s 4K 59.94p output – which used to require four cables in 3G-SDI – can be delivered with just one cable. This means 4K can be handled with the same number of transmission cables as Full HD.
12G-SDI feed directly out of the XF605 and an external HDMI output facilitate easy connection to a 4K UHD-compatible or standard HD interlace video monitor.
This firmware update allows the XF605 to be compatible with Frame.io Camera to Cloud (C2C) enabled devices by providing triggers, clipname, and timecode over SDI.1 Since C2C enabled devices upload files automatically from the shooting location to Frame.io, postproduction teams can instantly view clips in this cloud collaboration platform, as well as edit, share, and approve content – reducing the total time to distribution.2
Other terminal connections that help streamline workflows include dedicated jacks for: headphone, mic, USB (Type-C and Type-A), Remote A, Remote B (RS422), Ethernet, Genlock/Sync OUT and SMPTE Time Code.

Flexible Audio Inputs with Linear PCM 4-channel Support
The XF605 Professional Camcorder offers a variety of ways to record high-quality linear PCM 4ch audio: through two XLR terminals, a stereo mini-jack mic terminal, or from the camcorder’s internal stereo mic. The on-board 4ch audio independent settings let users set recording levels, input sensitivity and limiters for each channel.
Multi Function Shoe
Supports new XLR accessory which adds two additional XLR ports. The additional XLR ports allow for additional audio inputs and flexibility when recording ENG footage and HOW services.
Compact, Lightweight and Ergonomic Design
The XF605 Professional Camcorder is compact and lightweight, making it especially useful for on-the-go Electronic News Gathering (ENG) and documentary production applications.
Live IP Streaming
The XF605 Professional Camcorder offers the ability to stream video live online using IP transmission in H.264/AVC encoding format.
The livestream can be viewed directly from the camcorder using the on-board LCD monitor, sent to a standalone IP encoder, or redirected to a monitor for a confidence check and public viewing.
The latest firmware (now available) includes the addition of SRT video streaming protocol for secure, low-latency Web streaming over IP networks.
Remote Control Support
The XF605 Professional Camcorder is compatible with Canon’s optional RC-V100 Remote Controller, enabling image quality adjustments and other important operations to be set from a distance. The RC-V100 plugs into the XF605 through the remote terminal on the rear panel.
Alternatively, the XF605 can be controlled from an IP network using the RC-IP1000 or RC-IP100 camera controllers. Both the RC-IP1000 and the RC-IP100 support Canon’s IP-based XC Protocol, enabling the camera to be remotely controlled from virtually anywhere.
Canon Multi-Camera Control App
A wireless smartphone remote control option has been added with the release of the Canon Multi-Camera Control App for iPhone*.
The Canon Multi Camera Control App provides the ability to control multiple cameras wirelessly from an iPhone via Wi-Fi. The free app empowers you to have control over recording start and stop, focus, zoom and iris, ND Filters, ISO, Shutter, White Balance, and Custom picture control all while viewing the image from the camera.

Remote Camera Control Application
The Remote Camera Control Application is an application for centralized control of multiple cameras. It is possible to operate up to nine cameras and display videos at the same time – achieving a “multi-camera operation”.
At a video production or broadcasting site, an operator can select a camera from the videos displayed on the “Connected Camera List”, within the application and operate it from the “Camera Control Area” in the control panel of the software. The software is included and can be installed immediately without having to prepare a hardware controller in advance making it easy to use for the operator while creating an effective one-person operation.
CTM (Content Transfer Mobile) iPhone Application
Allows for immediate transfer of proxy footage and metadata to be transferred to newsroom planning servers using ML-G2. Metadata can be edited before and after shooting. Canon’s CTM (Content Transfer Mobile) application and workflow is designed to assist in the quick and seamless delivery of video files and footage from remote operators in the field.

Network Connections for FTP Transfer and Browser Remote (Wired and Wi-Fi Connectivity)
The XF605 Professional Camcorder offers both wired and wireless connectivity to enable recorded files to be shared and transmitted back to the station or home base via FTP for editing or live streaming.
The camcorder can also be accessed remotely from a typical web browser running on a laptop or a compatible smart device to control functions such as record start/stop, record mode and frame rate, AF/MF switching, focus/zoom settings and white balance mode. Background transfer of video files via FTP links is also possible, enabling the latest news images, for example, to be distributed quickly over the Internet.
Waveform Monitor / Vectorscope
Users have the option to double the size of the on-screen waveform monitor and vectorscope. The ability to adjust opacity (transparency) of these on-screen tools makes it easier to see and adjust exposure while shooting. The vectorscope displays the custom picture color space along with the name for each color.
Enhanced Clear Scan Mode
Clear Scan shutter mode helps reduce or virtually eliminate the flickering caused by some LED walls.
